Building an LED Screen - Part 2 - Strips Arrive

May 4th, 2011

My new LED Strips arrived today. Above is a picture of them. Eagerly awaiting their arrival, I had to dedicate some time to attaching them to the pegboard.

Unfortunately I had less left over than I was hoping for (approx 1.5m), but at least I had enough to fill the screen.

Here is a shot of where I intend to place the Teensy upon completion of the screen.

What comes next? Wiring. Lots and lots of wiring. Stay Tuned.

Building an LED Screen - Part 1 - Intro(My Vision)

May 3rd, 2011

In what little spare time I have outside of work and my music I am attempting to build an LED screen. I will be posting pictures and videos of my progress. Here are some technical specs about the project.

Initial Parts List:

The RGB LED Strips should arrive this week. I have some experience with this strip but I kind of butchered (cut into individual pieces and thus destroyed the protective weather layer) so I figured it would be more elegant and reliable to start with clean strips.

The Teensy, being an ATMel chip, is very similar to the Arduino. In fact there is an addon for the IDE to program the Teensy (appropriately named TeensyDuino). I made a simple 1 RGB LED fader with an Arduino months ago and now I am ready to build something more substantial. The programming will be the biggest challenge. My intention is have three modes of operation: Stored/Programmed Patterns, Real-Time Computer Driven, and Sound Reactive. I will be approaching the programming in that order as well.

Michael Jackson (1958 - 2009)

June 25th, 2009

Man...sorry to pick up my forgotten blog for so long, especially with bad news, but definitely worth archiving. The King of Pop died today after suffering cardiac arrest. He went into a coma after complications and died at a hospital in Los Angeles. Born August 29, 1958 (Age 50), Michael is survived by his three children: Paris Michael I, Paris and Prince Michael II. As the artist of the best selling album of all time, he will be missed.

Alright, now that I got the general info out of the way, I fell I should elaborate a little on the topic. I'll be adding to this as I go....

Darwin Award #01 - Check your Trailer Height

July 11th, 2008

Here's the first (of probably many) Darwin Award qualifying clips to be featured on my blog. The criteria is can't be too offensive or graphic, but must be a "what the hell we're you thinking" situation that the nominee probably didn't survive. Learn from these lessons.
